Portland’s newest professional taiko company, UNIT SOUZOU (pronounced “sohzoh”) is at the forefront of a growing artistic movement within the world-wide taiko community. With over 20 years of professional experience, Michelle Fujii and Toru Watanabe, co-directors of UNIT SOUZOU are relentless innovators known for their fusion of taiko and Japanese folk dance.
2:00-3:00pm – Latin American Folk
Gerardo Calderon is a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist. Born and raised in Mexico City, he grew up surrounded by music, dance and culture. His performances showcase his interest in traditional Mexican, Latin American folk, and Pre-Colombian music.
3:30-4:30pm – Rustic Americana
Cedar Teeth hails from the Cascade foothills. Their music is shaped by the experience of living in the margin dividing the wilderness from the city: sweeping and immersive, at turns rustically melodic and lyrically raw.
5:00-6:00pm – Freestyle Street Funk
The Transcendental Brass Band is a west-coast take on the classic New Orleans Tradition: a touch of funk, a smidgen of jazz, and some sprinklings of ska, hip-hop and free form pop. They will start their performance with a procession down Broadway to the main stage.
6:30-8:00pm – Upbeat West African
Chata Addy, The Music Man, was born and raised outside the city of Accra, in Ghana, West Africa. He has been delighting Northwest audiences since 1989 with his groovy mix of Afro Reggae and Funky Highlife.
8:30-10:00pm – All Star Tribute to the master
Portland Blues Legend Sonny Hess heads up this Celebration of BB King. Composed of top NW Blues artists that have been personally touched by the amazing guitar great, come feel the thrill as they pay tribute to the great blues tradition BB inspired.
